I just noticed yesterday that there is an Aqua Tots Swim School franchise going up in the new strip mall that is located on the northeast corner of 144th & Fort Streets. From the looks ot things, it appeared that they should be open for business any day now. If you live in the Northwest Omaha area and are looking for kids' swim lessons or swim teams, you might want to check out their programs. I will post again when I find out their grand opening date. Click on the link below for more details:

End-of-School-Year Backpack Search Yields Many Mysteries, Including Decomposing Ones

Yesterday was my son's second to last day of school. When he made it up to my car at dismissal time, I could see that he was really struggling with his backpack, so I reached over and opened the door for him and helped him hoist it into the car, exclaiming, "What the heck is in here?" He responded, "It's all trash, Mom, but the teachers wouldn't let us throw it way at school! We had to bring it home? Why?'' I explained that the teachers probably wanted the parents to be able to look through all of their child's work and see if there was anything they wanted to save. I'm also thinking that the school doesn't have enough trash cans and dumpsters to even deal with the detrituts that a few hundred students have managed to collect over the course of a school year.

When we got home, I unzipped every section and poket of the backpack, and I went through all the contents item by item. I found a birthday party invitation that I never knew my son had received, so I had never responded. Being the kind of person who prides herself on prompt responses to invitations, I felt like a jackass knowing that there's now one more person out there who thinks I'm completely rude and thoughtless. I'm completely mortified, and I plan to call the mom to apologize and to explain what happened.

In different parts of the backack, I also found food in various stages of decomposition. Fortunately, everything was either in plastic wrap or a baggie, and nothing smelled. The only item I could identify was something that looked like a petrified Little Debbie cupcake which I am assuming is something that was handed out for someone's birthday or another school celebration.

I remember earlier in the school year when my son's classmates were all out in the hallway when a moldy, green sandwich rolled out of my son's locker. According to my son, everyone wanted to see, smell, and even touch the sandwich, and for a few brief moments, my son felt like a celebrity. He was still radiant with accomplishment when he bragged to me later about just how rotten the sandwich was. It's strange, I know, but I wasn't so excited to find the rotting remnants of lunches and snacktimes past.

On a similar note, this morning I decided to finally tackle organizing my son's bedroom closet. I had the doors open and was studying the contents to try to figure out how many containers and in what sizes I should buy when I realized that a better way to answer this question would be to empty the closet's contents first, stack like items together, and then figure out what kind of storage items I would need. When the closet was almost completely empty, I reached into the far rear corner and pulled out what appeared to be a partially decomposed sandwich/wrap/tortilla/enchilada? in a zip-loc bag. Was it a snack that had been put aside and then forgotten? Or, was it a dinner that my son didn't want to eat and then tried to hide? I'm sure that when I ask my son about it, he'll have no memory of it whatsoever. I, on the other hand, will continue to be baffled about how someone as neat and tidy as myself could have raised a son who would do such things. Could a mom with older sons tell me? Are rock-hard Little Debbie pastries and moldy sandwiches portents of things to come? Are nasty college dorm rooms and filthy bachelor apartments lined up on my son's horizon? Or is there still hope?

Next Fall, a new elementary school will be opening in our district, so about half of the kids who attended my son's elementary school this year will be attending the new school next Fall, including one of my son's best friends Clay. A couple of days ago, my son Aidan told me that he and Clay had already come up with a way to mark their very last recess together. My heart kind of caught in my throat as I listened, and I couldn't helped but be touched at the fact that the two of them had planned something special ahead of time. Then Aidan told me the plan: The two of them were going to spend the entire recess siting on the tire swing together, telling each other the grossest jokes and stories they could think of to see who would be able to make whom laugh the hardest. Okay, so once I heard the entire plan, it was just the slightest bit less touching, but on the other hand, they're boys, right? So what did I expect them to do? Make each other friendship bracelets? I have to constantly remind myself that boys apparently have very different ways of bonding than girls do.

My son also found out yesterday that another very good friend of his from school is moving to Florida in three weeks. I know that not having two of his best friends at school next Fall is going to be really hard, but we'll just have to help him through it as best we can when the time comes. Has anyone else been through a similar situation with your own child. What, if anything, did you do that helped?
