Around the Block: Omaha’s Neighborhoods in the 1930s
June 16-Aug. 19, 2012
Omaha began by the shore of the Missouri River with a handful of people. But less than a hundred years later it had become a city where thousands of people lived and worked. As Omaha grew, new neighborhoods joined the city, but each retained its separate identity and history. Around the Block: Omaha’s Neighborhoods in the 1930s was developed by two museum interns and includes 70 photographs drawn from the museum’s Photo Archive depicting downtown Omaha, Florence and Minne Lusa, Bemis Park, South Omaha, Dundee, Benson, the Gold Coast, and Kountze Park Place in the early 1900s. The photographs detail the people, culture, architecture, and history of these Omaha neighborhoods.

Note: After the opening festivities for "The Rainbow" Exhibit have concluded, morning and evening rainbow events will be presented twice daily over the Center, weather permitting. All events are FREE and open to the general public. Please check "Rainbow Status Updates" and confirm the date and time of each event before making arrangements to travel to the Bemis for a rainbow viewing.

RAINBOW STATUS UPDATE

The National Weather Service is predicting heavy cloud coverage early tomorrow, Saturday, June 23. As a result, there will be no rainbow in the morning. We are still planning on the evening rainbow at 8:00 pm, during the opening reception. See you there!

THE RAINBOW OPENING WEEKEND

Public Tour: Friday, June 22 | 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Panel Discussion: Saturday, June 23 | 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 23 | 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Come join us for the launch of Michael Jones McKean’s The Rainbow: Certain Principles of Light and Shapes Between Forms. The project will launch with a public tour on Friday, June 22 followed by a panel discussion and opening reception on Saturday, June 23, 2012. Morning and evening rainbow events will be presented each day. All events are free and open to the public.

Artist Michael Jones McKean will lead the public tour of The Rainbow system and gallery exhibition on Friday, June 22, at 6:00 pm. On Saturday June 23 at 5:00 pm, a panel discussion moderated by Bemis Center chief curator Hesse McGraw and featuring the entire project team will explore the cross-disciplinary collaboration that made The Rainbow possible. Following the panel, an opening reception will be held at 6:00 pm.

Both evenings will culminate in a simple, but phenomenal, visual event — a rainbow in the sky. These rainbows will be the first in a series of twice-daily events to occur above our building at 12th & Leavenworth St. in Omaha, Nebaska this summer. The Rainbow is heavily dependent on weather conditions, so events will be scheduled 24 hours in advance. Information on upcoming rainbows can be found at www.therainbow.org, our Facebook page, or by using The Rainbow mobile app.

Pacific Railway Act
July 1-July 31, 2012
July 2012 marks the 150th anniversary of a critical piece of legislation that established the foundational transportation system of the United States. The Pacific Railway Act was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on July 1, 1862 and established the Union Pacific Railroad Company to build the first transcontinental railroad west from the Missouri River. In a special presentation from July 1-31, 2012, The Durham Museum will display three pages of the 1862 Pacific Railway Act from the National Archives, alongside several other railroad artifacts from Omaha’s own Byron Reed Collection.

About Great Park Pursuit

Nebraska Recreation and Park Association and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission partnered in 2008 to develop the Great Park Pursuit (GPP). Our goal is to help promote active lifestyles while increasing awareness of the nature rich outdoor recreation opportunities throughout Nebraska.

Rules and Procedures:
  • Register online or request a hardcopy registration form via email info@negpp.org.
    • Create a user (group or family) name and password when registering.
    • User name and password allows participants to login to track team progress and update group information.
    • Each participant may only be on one team.
    • There can only be one team per household.
  • Select a park from the Locations page on the GPP website.
  • Print off the Park Page(s) and take it with your team to the selected park(s).

(FREE!) Outdoor Activities at Gene Leahy Mall in Downtown Omaha

Downtown Improvement District to Activate
Leahy Mall with FREE Outdoor Activities

The benefits of people engaged in positive activities in quality public spaces are immeasurable. In an effort to capture those benefits, the Omaha Downtown Improvement District Association (DID) will kick off a season of FREE activities and mini events on Monday, May 7th at 5:30 p.m. at the Gene Leahy Mall. Activities will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m., Mondays-Thursdays during the months of May, June, August and September at 14th & Farnam Streets.

Events will be free to the public and cater to different audiences depending on the day:

• Mondays – Family Fun. Activities will include short plays by the Rose Theater (Big Bad Wolf, The Bully Show, Famous Women of the 20th Century and the World of Dr. Seuss), storytelling by Barrett Scroggs or David Johnson, balloon animal instruction and live music.

• Tuesdays & Thursdays – Boot Camp Exercise Classes. Certified YMCA instructors will lead participants through a series of heart pumping, muscle building, sweat generating exercises.

• Wednesdays – Arts & Culture. Attendees will be treated to live musical concerts, walking tours of downtown Omaha’s amazing public art collection, and improv comedy by The Traveling Knights of the Evengard.

With this series of FREE outdoor events, the DID hopes to engage the community and promote the use of downtown’s public spaces. These events provide great opportunities for social interaction and a compelling reason for people to use the space.

“When we say there is always something going on downtown, we mean it,” said Joe Gudenrath. “We are proud to provide fun, free opportunities to enjoy downtown and one of our great public spaces – the Gene Leahy Mall.”

In 2011, the DID conducted a pilot program which provided exercise classes in public spaces throughout downtown. The success of that program led to this year’s expanded calendar of events. To view the complete calendar of events please visit the DID website at www.omahadowntown.org.

For more information, please contact Joe Gudenrath at (402) 916-1796 or email joe.omahadid@gmail.com">joe.omahadid@gmail.com.

The Karate Kid centers on Daniel (Ralph Macchio), a teenager who recently arrived in Los Angeles from the east coast. He soon becomes the object of bullying by the Cobras, a gang of karate students. Eager to fight back but afraid to confront the dangerous gang, Daniel asks handyman and martial arts master Miyagi (Noriyuki 'Pat' Morita) to teach him karate. Miyagi teaches Daniel that there is more to karate than fighting. Under Miyagi's guidance, Daniel develops the skills and self-confidence to meet the obstacles he encounters in this inspiring film.

Before you learn some karate moves, practice your dance move to music by All Young Girls Are Machine Guns. The Omaha-based band is the award-winning brainchild of ukulele-wielding, bow-hunting, beating-of-the-drum-type misfits. They will make you dance…whether you like it…or not.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (PG) and UNO Faculty Jazz Combo
Release date: 1981
Run time: 115 minutes

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is no ordinary archeologist. When we first see him, he is somewhere in the Peruvian jungle, running a booby-trapped gauntlet to fetch a solid-gold idol. After a clever escape, he is asked to find the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. But to find the Ark, Indy must first secure a medallion kept under the protection of his old friend Abner Ravenwood. Despite personal differences, Indy is joined by Marion, Ravenwood’s daughter, in one action-packed adventure. A joint project of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, Raiders of the Lost Ark is not so much a movie as a 115-minute thrill ride.

Get ready to travel the globe with Indy by listening to an exciting mix of "America's Music" from the UNO Faculty Jazz Combo. The combo's repertoire is a blend of jazz standards sprinkled with Latin styles, funk and vocals.
