Two Gentlemen of Verona (the Musical)

Adapted by John Guare & Mel Shapiro
Lyrics by John Guare Music by Galt MacDermot
Based on the play by William Shakespeare

June 24-27, July 8, 10, 2010
The performance on Thursday, July 8 will be ASL-interpreted.
Services made possible through the support of the William R. Patrick Foundation.

Julia: They do not love that do not show their love.
Lucetta: O! they love least that let men know their love. (I.ii.31)

Proteus and Valentine are the best of friends until Proteus also falls for the new object of Valentine's affections: Silvia. Forsaking his own betrothed, Julia, Proteus sets out to betray his unsuspecting friend, only to find that both Silvia and Julia have a thing or two to teach him about loyalty and love.

A young man's folly drives the action in this Tony Award-winning musical based on what may have been Shakespeare's first comedy: a madcap romp that bubbles over with the playwright's own youthful energy.

Romeo and Juliet

July 1-4, 9, 11, 2010
The performance on Friday, July 2 will be ASL-interpreted.
Services made possible through the support of the William R. Patrick Foundation.

These violent delights have violent ends. (Friar Lawrence, II.vi.9)

The houses of Montague and Capulet are sworn enemies. When Romeo, a Montague, and Juliet, a Capulet, fall in love they do not know whom each other is. They marry in secret, while the feud rages. When Romeo's friend Mercutio is killed by Juliet's cousin, Tybalt, Romeo in turn kills Tybalt. He is banished from Verona, while Juliet's family plan to marry her to someone else. Friar Lawrence hatches a plan to reunite the lovers, but messages are crossed and they are driven to their deaths instead.

Sensory Friendly Family Movie Showings at AMC Oak View 24 Movie Theater
Calendar: Events Calendar
Rhonda Dunaway
07-10-2010
*The times shown may change, depending on DST settings
The AMC Oak View 24 movie theater in Omaha offers sensory-friendly showings of child and family-friendly movies each month. For more details, including a schedule, please read the information below.

In partnership with the Autism Society of America, we bring AMC Sensory Friendly Films to families affected by autism on a monthly basis to select communities.

The program provides a special opportunity for families to enjoy their favorite films in a safe and accepting environment. The auditoriums dedicated to the program have their lights up, the sound turned down and audience members are invited to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing!
The idea for the program began with a request from a parent with an autistic child for a special screening at AMC Columbia Mall 14 in Columbia, MD. More than 300 children and parents attended the first screening.

We are thrilled to now offer the program at many locations nationwide — please click here for a complete list of participating theatres. As a leading theatrical exhibition company, we are so proud to be making a difference in the estimated 1.5 million Americans living with an autism spectrum disorder by offering families a chance to see a movie together — often for the very first time.

Upcoming Sensory-Friendly showings* include:

January 9 – Alvin & The Chipmunks 2
February 6 – The Tooth Fairy
March 27 – How to Train Your Dragon
April 24 – Oceans
May 22 – Shrek 4
June 16 – Toy Story 3
July 10 – Despicable Me
August 7 – Cats & Dogs 2
September 25 – The Guardian of Ga’Hoole
October 9 – The Zookeeper

All shows are at 10:00 am.
*Dates and films are subject to change.

Be weather wise with the help of WOWT, the Red Cross, and OPPD!
When it’s cloudy with a chance of …… DISASTER, it’s important to know what to do! Join us for Storm Savvy Saturday on July 10 and learn how the pros predict the weather and how to prepare for when disaster strikes.

• The weather team from WOWT will give a special presentation at 1PM in the Stanley and Dorothy Truhlsen Lecture Hall. Get tips about how to prepare for natural disasters in our area and learn about the tools WOWT uses to predict the weather.

• All day, volunteers from the Red Cross will be on hand to help you “Be Red Cross Ready” for a major storm event. An Emergency Response Vehicle will be on display and the Red Cross will distribute preparation check lists and activity books for the kids to help all members of your family be prepared. And be sure to meet Ernie, the Red Cross’s ERV mascot – this giant remote control car moves, talks, and gives advice!

• At 11AM, 12PM, or 2:30PM take part in the Masters of Disasters Program given by the Red Cross. Learn how to prevent, prepare for, and respond to weather-related geological or human caused disasters. Get tips on how to create your own disaster kits as well as how to address fears that little ones might have about storms.

• A team of OPPD safety professionals and line technicians will also be on hand to give demonstrations about the importance of electrical safety. The team will show OPPD’s RESPECT safety trailer, equipped with an energized power line to demonstrate the importance of keeping a safe distance from power lines.

• Be sure to stop by the Red Cross Bloodmobile during your visit and help the American Red Cross maintain a stable blood supply this summer. Every day, more than 38,000 pints of blood are needed for patients in hospitals across the country. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in Nebraska), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age or younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

The Earth sustains us, protects us, and makes life possible; but it also humbles us with its dramatic power. This summer, The Durham Museum is pleased to host Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters from Chicago’s Field Museum. This dynamic exhibition, explores natural disasters through stunning displays, state of-the-art animations, poignant, large-scale images, and cultural artifacts that reveal the dynamic relationship we have with the Earth. Nature Unleashed focuses on four types of disasters – earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, and tornados. These phenomena are the spectacular results of the forces that drive our ever-changing planet. Nature Unleashed examines the science behind the history and headlines and illustrates how much we know and how much we are still learning about nature’s terrifying power. Visitors are in for a memorable and powerful experience! Witness what it’s like to stand inside a roaring tornado; trigger an underwater earthquake and simulate a tsunami; create a virtual volcano; touch and examine rock and lava specimens that tell of past geologic events; discover how people adapt to living at risk; and be inspired by the resiliency of disaster survivors. Nature Unleashed will be on display May 22 – September 12, 2010 at The Durham Museum.

To help celebrate the opening of Nature Unleashed on May 22, The Durham Museum has dancing, storytelling and more! Join us for a Forces of Nature dance workshop with Josie Metal-Corbin, The Wind Blew storytelling with Dave Johnson and create windsocks in the Craft Corner. Visit www.durhammuseum.org for a full description of activities.

In a partnership with Nebraska Life magazine and WOWT, The Durham Museum has gathered stories and objects from witnesses to these events.

The Gritty City
"The Gritty City" tour will take visitors through downtown Omaha, pointing out several historic locations, including the former site of Madame Anna Wilson's home, The Brandeis Building, and the Paxton Hotel, all the while highlighting the impact of noted individuals and events in our city's sometimes turbulent history.

Millionaires & Mansions
"Millionaires & Mansions" tour will explore Omaha's Gold Coast and Cathedral neighborhoods, where the entrepreneurs of early Omaha built their opulent homes. The tour will visit the former homes of influential Omahans such as Arthur Metz, Louis Nash, Sam Mercer, George Joslyn, and Arthur and Zerlina Brandeis, noting their contributions to the growth of the city.

The Magic City
"The Magic City" tour will focus on the growth of South Omaha. South Omaha was founded in 1884 along with the creation of the Union Stockyards. By 1890, South Omaha was the fastest growing city in the country, earning the nickname, "The Magic City." Waves of immigrants flocked to the community to carve out a new life.

From Expositions to Jazz Musicians: Exploring North Omaha's Heritage North Omaha was a diverse and vibrant community in Omaha's early years. Businesses flourished along 24th street well into the 1950's and stately homes, parks and jazz halls made this area a cultural center of Omaha. North Omaha was also the location of the Trans-Mississippi Exposition of 1898.
