Velveetah, our beloved Steals 'n Deals diva, was the first to tell us about Half Price Books, a new second-hand book store soon to open in Omaha. Her post led me to go explore the store yesterday. You can't purchase anything yet, but they will let you walk around and browse. They will also purchase books from you now. In fact, I sold my first bagful to them yesterday.
The store is looking good. It's much larger than I expected, with far more titles than I ever expected. The prices look pretty good, too. For instance, I saw current hardback bestsellers that were marked at half the publisher's listed price. If you combine those prices with the grand opening coupons the store is giving out, you'll be able to get some great deals when the store opens.
In addition to books, the store also has magazines, cd's, dvd's, and video games. I love to cook, so I was really impressed by the huge selection of cookbooks. They also have a great-looking children's area with a big variety of books for kids of all ages. I saw a lot of fun video games that I wanted to buy for my son, but I'll just have to hope they're still there when the store opens for business.
The store is having a soft opening on February 18th, and their regular grand opening will be on February 21st.
People have asked me if I received a good price for the books I sold. I have never tried to sell used books before, so I don't have anything upon which to base a comparison. I received $23 for somewhere between 20-25 books (a combination of hardbacks and paperbacks). I was happy to sell them this way because I know that I'm way too lazy to have a garage sale or to try to sell them on e-bay. Since I normally donate used books to the library or to Goodwill, that's my basis of comparison. So, yes, I was happy to receive $23, as opposed to nothing.
If you like to buy books, I really recommend that you check out Half-Price books, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
