For Christmas, my 6-year-old son received several books from his aunt (aka Velveetah on our website), including a couple of Ready, Freddy chapter books. We started with the Ready, Freddy books, and my son has absolutely fallen in love with them. The books follow the adventures of a first-grader named Freddy and his group of friends. The books are engaging and funny, and they address many of the issues that kids this age are facing. For example, there is a class bully named Max who taunts the other kids. The books talk about how the kids feel about Max and also how they react to his taunts and teasing. There is also a class diva named Chloe who is very spoiled and who brags about her material possessions. As with Max, the books show the kids' reactions and how they deal with Chloe's bragging. So, besides being fun, I think the books are very instructive, too.
The other night, I read my son several chapters from The King of Show and Tell. He begged to read the entire book, but I told him it was time to go to bed and that we would finish the book the next day. The first thing the next morning, he woke me up and begged me to read the remainder of the book. I was so thrilled to see him this excited about reading that I got out of bed and began reading to him while I was still bleary-eyed.
If you are looking for some great books for kids this age (early grade school), I highly recommend the Ready, Freddy series. I think adults will enjoy them as much as children do.
