Last weekend, I felt like going to the movies, so I looked at the entertainment page of the newspaper to see the current offerings, and then I said to myself, "What says Christmas more than a post-apocalyptic scenario where hordes of crazed, starving zombie-vampires chase Will Smith down the deserted streets of New York city?" Well, I like Will Smith, and I like to be scared, so I decided to see the movie. Will did a great job of acting, especially considering that he didn't have a lot of people with whom he could interact (if you don't count the zombie-vampires). And, the German Shepard who played his dog in the movie should receive an Academy Award. But I found the story itself very disappointing. I know you have to have a willing suspension of disbelief to enjoy these types of movies, but even so, the plot was so ridiculously full of holes that I couldn't stop trying to analyze how everything fit together -- it doesn't. Also, and I know this is going to sound strange, but I didn't think the movie was scary enough. When I shared this with my mom, she gave me an "are you crazy look?" and then said, "Well it was scary enough for me." Anyway, after seeing the previews, I had developed certain expectations, and then when I saw the movie, I felt let down. It's difficult for me to pinpoint why or specifically articulate things other than to say that I just expected more. My recommendation is that you don't spend your money at the theatre, but wait until it comes out on dvd or even until it comes to cable television.
