I finally made it to the new Film Streams Theatre on 14th and Webster Streets. I had been putting off going there because I kept thinking that it would be too far to travel and I was concerned that the parking situation wouldn't be good. On Sunday, I went to see "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" because I had read some extremely positive reviews about the movie, and Films Streams was the only theatre in Omaha showing it. It was definitely worth the trip. The drive wasn't bad at all because the traffic was light. The parking situation wasn't bad, either; I only had to park about half a block from the movie theatre. The theatre's interior is very nice, kind of a modern/industrial look. I will go there again because I like the selection of films they offer: documentaries, foreign, art, and independent films, like the ones you can usually see only at the Dundee, although the AMC Oakview theatre is beginning to show some of these types of films, also.

"Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" was absolutely fantastic, but if you decide to see it, be prepared. It's a haunting, gruesome story about a completely dysfunctional family where the members despise one another and yet can't break free from their relationships. Gradually, they begin to turn on one another in ways that you cannot even begin to imagine. (I know, I know. It's like that family Thanksgiving from a couple of weeks ago played out all over again. But trust me, this is truly far worse.) The plot is complex, suspenseful, and disturbing. The tension builds and builds, and it never releases, not even at the end of the movie. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke play two brothers in the movie, and they are both absolutely spellbinding. Their portrayals made me think of the infamous Menendez brothers, but somehow, I wound up thinking that the fictional characters were far worse. I think this movie will definitely receive some Oscars.
