I had a conversation with Rhonda recently and she said she gets many questions about what to do to get a child to stop sucking their thumb.
Our daughter was a big thumb sucker. Unfortunately, she also has asthma which would flare dramatically whenever she was sick and we traveled alot at the time. Feeling that her thumb was a significant source of germs we decided we needed to tackle this head on.
Rosemarie Van Norman is a Certified OroFacial Myologist right here in Omaha who is nationally recognized for her work with thumb sucking children. We visited her and had success with her program. It is quite strict and you must truly be dedicated to the process.
Our daughter did relapse during an especially ill time and we decided her thum sucking buddy - a bear named Gustaf - needed to go visit his family in the black forest. We also took her to an orthodontist who placed a dental device ont he roof of her mouth which prevented her from sucking. It was attached to her molars like braces. She did manage to dislodge this three times so she could suck her thumb.
WE kept at it though and she no longer sucks her thumb and expereinces less frequent illness! AT Christmas time Gustaf returned fromt he Black Forest with another relative named Olga. They sleep together with out thumb sucking.
