I see that Septemberfest is coming up soon. I haven't been in town for one of these. Is this worth going to? Are there enough things for kids to do to make it worth a trip downtown? Sometimes these labor day festivals seem more like big beer gardens with a carnival thrown in as an afterthought.

If you'e looking for something to do over Labor Day weekend, the State Fair is much more fun than Septemberfest--but it is a longer drive to Lincoln. If the weather is nice, it wouldn't be all bad to go to Septemberfest though. They usually have some fun things for kids to do--the usual rides, a petting zoo, etc. Personally, our family likes River City Roundup better--it's coming up in late September. The RCR parade interests my kids more because of all the horses. They also do some fun indoor things at the Qwest Center just for kids.

Hi, MomAC.

Thanks for writing. My husband and I were debating whether to go to Septemberfest or the State Fair this coming weekend. (We don't have the time to go to both, so it's an either/or situation.) Anyway, I think we'll try the State Fair now.

The state fair does sound good. I haven't been to one in a long time. As long as i can keep the kids away from the most stomach churning rides just after they eat i'll be okay.

Just a quick reminder if you're planning on hitting the State Fair this weekend. The Nebraska game is Saturday afternoon, so it's going to be a madhouse in Lincoln with the traffic and crowds. Much better to hit the Fair on Friday, Sunday, or even Monday.

Also, if you decide you don't want to deal with the huge crowds at the State Fair or Septemberfest, you might want to check out this event:

The 23rd annual La Festa Italiana runs through Sunday at Roncalli High, 65th & Sorensen Pkwy. Kids rides, strolling clowns, bands, and lots of food. www.omahaitaly.com (http://www.omahaitaly.com)

(thanks tammywk for the La Festa Italiana info)
